Course objective and scope
This 1-day hazard awareness course offers the opportunity for delegates to gain a basic understanding of fires and explosions through a combination of practical demonstrations and lectures. The emphasis of the day is on the first-hand experience gained from being able to see and feel the effects of the hydrocarbon releases. This is supported by presentations, videos and case studies designed to provide an overview of major accident hazards and a basic understanding of mechanisms of fires and explosions. The course is accredited by the IChemE.
Course content
The course presentations will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to major accident hazards
- The effects of congestion and confinement on explosions
- Explosion development and consequences
- Introduction to fires
- Case study: Buncefield.
The following types of incidents will be demonstrated:
- Vapour cloud deflagration
- Confined, vented explosion
- Methanol pool fire
- Diesel pool fire
- Scaffold pole as a dropped object resulting in a gas release
- Spindle jet fire
- Flange jet fire
- Large jet fire.

Charges for late cancellation
No charge will be made if written cancellation is received by us at least 14 days before the event. If written cancellation is received less than 14 days prior to the event, 50% of the fee is payable.
