Port State Control (PSC) performance is one of the most important safety indicators for shipping companies and individual vessels. Due to the transparent nature of PSC inspections, PSC performance is also increasingly used by third parties as general quality indicator, e.g. when investing in or chartering ships.
Maritime administrations also leverage the available data themselves to apply risk-based approaches based on ship risk profiles. Therefore detentions do not only have immediate severe consequences such as off-hire for the time of detention but also put vessels on the target list for more frequent and more detailed inspections.
Based on an analysis of over 100,000 port state inspections, we identified typical profiles and patterns that can help to improve PSC performance and avoiding being detained.
The presenters were Eike Hartmann, Managing Consultant for Shipping Advisory at DNV GL – Maritime and Claudia Ohlmeier, Group leader for PSC at DNV GL – Maritime.
