Cyber security awareness
DNV GL and GARD raises cyber security awareness onboard. Watch and download our video!
Lots have been said about the increasing threat of cyber terror and hackers, and the increasingly digitalized maritime industry is under constant threat from either intentional or unintentional cyber incidents. Many DNV GL customers have also experienced the “dark side” of cyber security. DNV GL and GARD have joined forces to produce a best-practices for crew and onshore personnel.
Two leading companies with a keen interest on safe shipping – class society DNV GL and insurance provider GARD – have joined forces and produced an awareness video for the maritime industry on cyber security. The video mainly targets crew and shore-based personnel, but is equally valuable for other stakeholders such as equipment manufacturers, yards, designers, class surveyors, flag states and PSC inspectors.
The main objective of the joint DNV GL / GARD production is to build awareness and competence among crews and others. It focuses on daily tasks and routines, and aims to de-mystify the cyber security issue. Plus, it provides concrete recommendations on how to prevent cyber incidents. In addition, DNV GL and GARD have developed discussion materials on cyber security.
Cyber security is part of the ISM Code, effective from 2021, ensuring it will be part of a regulatory agenda in future.
The messages from DNV GL / GARD’s cyber security campaign are not intended to suggest any industry changes or rule changes, but rather changes in the way people behave and act. The Project Manager from DNV GL, Ole Vidar Nilsen, stresses: “We do not want to present cyber security as the hooded criminal hacker, but as part of safety and security on vessels. For example, every ship conducts fire and lifeboat drills, but do the crew prepare for a cyber attack? We want to influence good behaviour and a good attitude by managing this, for many new risks.”
